Final wraps on our first Christmas

20111227-084825.jpg
Our first Christmas eve under one roof. Who woulda thunk it.

He may be 18, but he’s still my little man

It was only a few blinks ago that John was wrapped up burrito-snug in a blue hospital blanket. Somehow, though, on December 17th he turned 18. We couldn’t resist summoning the help of Thomas to mark the day.

On a more sobering note, there’s no stopping John from getting behind the wheel of a car now. He’s not only turned 18, but successfully completed the requirements for his Eagle badge. I couldn’t be more proud.

Elfin magic on stage with Stella

What could be more Christmas than two fast-talking wise-crackin’ elves. The fast-paced script (complete with rim-shot punctuation) was a perfect platform for Stella.

She and her partner worked out their timing to perfection. It was the bright spot in the Christmas program.

Few people seem so naturally at home on stage as Stella. Then again, this Santa’s mildly biased where that elf is concerned.

Special thanks to Lisa Schoolfield who custom crafted the costumes. Amazing work.

Down by the bayou for an Eagle

With a little more than a week till his 18th birthday, John took on the mission of clearing debris from Braes Bayou to make it passable by canoe. It was slated to take two days to accomplish the goal.

Members of his scout troop were invited to participate. But, John didn’t stop there. He invited friends from Woods High to come out and help. Even though there was nothing in it for them other than helping John, eight came out on a cold Saturday morning. They’re pictured here with one of three shopping carts extracted from the muddy bayou.

Steve Smith, an Assistant Scoutmaster with the troop, and I pitched in to do our part. We even managed to rope and pull out a shopping cart of our own.

A man and his trash. John’s Woods High buddies and both scouts from Troop 1089, managed to do in a day what was expected to take two: about 500 yards of the  bayou was cleared and ready for canoe traffic.

What was most impressive of all: John pulled it all together himself.

A final seasonal tradition

Every year JP2 4th graders are issued recorders and work to learn such timeless classics as Hot Cross Buns and a slew of Christmas standards. Zu made the last Moger family appearance at the annual classic tonight. Fabulous performance. Of course.

Kyle’s meat-eatin’ birthday dinner

Nothing follows a birthday steak like a flaming dessert. Happy Birthday, Kyle!
